The air display that was due to take place on 8 June, but organisers have cancelled the event due to funding concerns.

Yvonne Holder, event organiser said: “After a very difficult few weeks, the hard decision has been taken to cancel Folkestone airshow for a number of factors. The first being is the financial risk of putting on this major event is too great for Folkestone Town Centre Management Ltd, a not for profit organisation, to take, in these very difficult times“.

The event was expected to bring in £12.6m to the local economy through visitor spend. The event organiser had told Academy FM in a previous interview that they needed more help financially to make the Airshow even bigger and had organised various fundraising events ahead of the day.

The Airshow was also unable to confirm additional flying displays, due to financial constraints.

Organisers thanked people for their support for the Folkestone Airshow and hope the support continues in 2014, where it is hoped it will go ahead.

Officers believe the bomb hoax at the Hythe Imperial Hotel on 28 September 2012 and an attempted robbery at a Bank in New Romney on 28 March this year may be related.

A man threatened a member of staff at the hotel, where he reportedly produced a handgun before claiming there was a bomb in the hotel.

In Romney Marsh, a man allegedly entered the Lloyds TSB on the High Street where he made an attempt to rob the bank.

The two CCTV images show footage of two men they would like to speak to.

The suspects in both incidents are described as in their 60’s.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Kent Police on 101, quoting ZY/28750/12 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

More beaches are to become dog free in Folkestone under new laws.

Mermaid Beach, in front of the Lower Leas Coastal Park, has been added to beaches that ban dogs from 1 May to 30 September.

Bans will also be in place on stretches of beach at Greatstone.

Under the new bylaws, dogs must also be kept on leads on promenades that run alongside those beaches during the period the ban is in place.

The district’s dog-free beaches are:

Folkestone: Sunny Sands and Mermaid Beach
Sandgate: Sandgate Castle to Battery Point
Hythe: Twiss Road to St Leonard’s Road, Hythe
Dymchurch: Sycamore Gardens to Martello Car Park
St Mary’s Bay: The Fairway to river outfall (Sands Motel)
Littlestone: Water tower at Madeira Road to Clark Road
Greatstone: Jolly Fisherman car park to 17 The Parade and 114 The Parade to 172 The Parade

Karyl Rimmer, dog warden for Shepway District Council said the coastline offered some great walks for dogs and owners: “But not everyone wants to share beaches with dogs all year round – which is why we have dog-free beaches in the summer. However, this still leaves plenty of other parts of our coastline for dogs and owners to enjoy.”

Soldiers from The 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha riffles have returned to their Shorncliffe barracks, near Folkestone after a tour of Afghanistan.

Around 80 Gurkhas were reunited with their families and friends, the last of the battalions 470 members to return to the barracks in Shorncliffe.

Two of their colleagues did not return. 29-year-old Lt Edward Drummond-Baxter, and L Cpl Siddhanta Kunwar, 28, were killed in October last year at a checkpoint in Helmand province, by a man wearing an Afghan police uniform at a shura (meeting), with members of the Afghan Uniform Police. Both men were attached to 40 Commando Royal Marines.

The Troops will now continue their training as they prepare to move to Brunei later this year.
