Festival acts announced

The line up for Canterbury’s Lounge on the Farm was released yesterday, along with many Early Bird tickets
.
Both Emeli Sande and the Wombats will be performing at the festival on Merton Farm in July. Along with them will be performances from Mystery Jets, Goldie, Chic and David Rodigan. Though more acts are due to be announced early March.

The licence for this year’s festival is yet to have been granted, however organisers are putting in new measures to ensure that there won’t be any repeats of the small incidents that took place last year.

This year the festival is promising tighter security, better fencing, structured stage times and a new car park plan.

Woman praised for tackling attackers

The girlfriend of a man that was assaulted in Ashford by two drunken bullies has been praised for her courage to tackle the men.

Marta Suchomski stood between her boyfriend and the two men as he was violently being kicked and punched.
Judge James O’Mahony stated that Marta had pleaded and put her own body on the line to stop them, which as a result meant she and her husband both got assaulted for her bravery.

Father of three, Tony Fuller, aged 25, has now been sentenced to 27 months in jail.

Lorry driver jailed after careless driving

A lorry driver was sentenced to 18 months in jail at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday. In addition to this he has been banned from driving for 2 years and is being made to re take his test after this time.

Clifford Sparks, aged 52, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and has left two families devastated, including the family of an Ashford dad of two.

The white lorry carrying many goods was driving towards Ashford last year when it collided with a green Renault. The collision happened in the Romney Marsh along the A2070.

Residents against Tram Road proposals

Folkestone residents living on the Tram Road have been surveyed to gauge public opinion on the road changing to a two way street.

Proposals by Kent County Council to convert the road have been met by protests and a campaign to keep it un-changed.

A survey by Folkestone & Hythe Labour Party asked residents if they were in favour of The Tram Road changing into a two way street, 22 out of the 25 people that responded said they were against it.

Man airlifted to hospital after falling from cliff

A man has suffered severe injuries after falling 50ft from a Kent cliff.

The man was airlifted to Kings College Hospital in London after falling from an exposed part of a walkway at Langdon Hole near Dover.

He was rescued by Dover Coastguard after he fell 16.5 meters to the shore.

The rescue service who were already in the area after another man had been injured on cliffs at Langdon.

Social worker admits stealing money from vulnerable children’s fund

A Dover social worker has admitted nine fraud charges after using money from an emergency fund for vulnerable children to pay her rent.

Pauline Stannard from Primrose Road, Dover, took nearly £5,000 from the account, designed to help children in need, including disabled youngsters.

The 63-year-old, who was working at social services Whitstable office when she fled to France as police started investigating theft claims from colleagues.

An audit in 2009 revealed that nine cheques had been written to Stannard’s Dover landlord. She was only arrested last year when she flew back to the UK for treatment for a skin condition.

The judge at Canterbury Crown Court gave the Kent woman a nine-month suspended jail sentence and ordered her to do 200 hours un-paid work.

Hythe woman charged after toddler left at Folkestone library

A 37-year-old woman from Hythe has been charged with child neglect after a young girl was left at Folkestone Library.

The child, approximately two to three years-old, was found in a pushchair on Wednesday, 22nd February at 6pm by staff at the library in Grace Hill, Folkestone when they were closing.

After an urgent police appeal, the 37-year-old woman was arrested in Ashford and is due to appear before magistrates on the 14th March.

Bravery Award for 14 local men

And finally, 14 bravery awards have been given out to a local lifeboat crew after saving seven lives.

The rescue happened on 3rd January after a training yacht crew, Liquid Vortex, was caught in gale force 9 to 11 winds near Dungeness Point. The crew on the yacht consisted of 4 men and 3 women.

One of the men, Garry Clark, 48, is being award the highest honour, the Silver Medal for Gallantry for leaping from the bow of the lifeboat, Pride and Spirit, to the yacht to help find the crew.

The crew will be honoured at a major RNLI ceremony in London on May 11th.

Tribute to Lloyd and Wenn

The funeral of the 26-year-old Daniel Lloyd who was found dead in pond takes place this weekend.

The funeral is being held at St Mildred’s Church in Canterbury from noon and the family have asked people to wear bright colours.

A collection will be taking place during the service for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and homeless charity Catching Lives.

After the service, Canterbury Christchurch University’s Student Union will be hosting a tribute afternoon to Daniel from 3.30pm where there will be a £5 donation on entry.

The funeral of 17-year-old Hugo Wenn took place yesterday who was also discovered in Reed Pond, near Tennyson Avenue, Canterbury.

Body locally identified

The identity of the dead man found in the flat where Stephen Farrow was found has been announced.

According to the Daily Mail, the young man has been locally identified as 16-year-old Keegan Wilkes and used to live at the house with his mother and three elder brothers.

The death of the man is being considered by police to be non-suspicious and a post-mortem will be held.
Stephen Farrow is being remanded in custody over the murders of 59-year-old Reverend John Suddards and 77-year-old Betty Yates and also faces a burglary charge.
