Dreamland regeneration company rebranded
May 30th, 2012
The owners of Margate’s Dreamland site are rebranding their company following the death of businessman Jimmy Godden. Margate Town Centre Regeneration Company has re-launched itself as DreamlandLive, and will be in Margate this summer to explain its proposals for the site.
One of the plans for the site includes a 4D simulator, exactly like the one at the Kennedy Space Centre in America. The state of the art 4D experience will be brought at a cost of £4m, and will stimulate all the senses as viewers watch a film featuring Dreamland through the ages, as it is believed this will be more relevant to younger audiences.
Canterbury Westgate traffic trial called into question
May 30th, 2012
Local businesses are calling for the controversial Westgate traffic trial to be scrapped early. The businesses placed nearby the road that is affected have started a petition demanding that the Westgate Towers be re-opened. It already has over 700 signatures, and will be discussed by the city council’s Overview Committee if it tops 1,500 by Tuesday 19 June.
The majority of county and city councillors at Monday night’s Canterbury Area Member Panel voted to recommend that the 12-month scheme, which started in March, be abandoned early, and want to re-open the area to traffic and reinstate a pedestrian crossing in North Lane.
Michael Weller, of Whitehall Bridge Road, criticised the scheme, saying the lack of pedestrian crossing makes it difficult for the elderly, disabled and blind to reach Westgate Gardens and the traffic rules are confusing, even for the police officers trying to enforce them. He also stated that the increase in traffic in the area has created rat runs and increased journey times, especially around the rush hour. The council’s transport boss Richard Moore said the lack of crossings was working well for most pedestrians, but admitted there is a concern in Station Road West; he recognised that some businesses had been hit hard, but said that pedestrian reliant companies, such as pubs and restaurants, had benefited.

Olympic Torch volunteers needed!
May 25th, 2012
Volunteers are needed to help marshal the route of the Olympic Torch as it passes through Dover on the 18th July.
Dover District Council is looking for people to work alongside trained stewards to ensure the torch passes through safely and to monitor spectators as they line the streets. Groups of people are encouraged to get involved but individuals are welcomed too; people will also be needed to help in the car parks and entrance points at the Evening Celebration on Dover Seafront.
All volunteers must be aged 16 or over (but spaces for 16 and 17 year-olds are limited). You’ll need to be available to attend a one hour training session on Saturday 14th July, and selected Team Leaders will be required on Wednesday 27th June for an extra session. Register online at the DDC website, www.dover.gov.uk, or call 01304 872446 before Monday 11th June 2012.
More hosepipe bans on the way?
May 25th, 2012
People across Folkestone and Dover have been urged to make water-saving a top priority this summer.
Veolia Water, Kent’s water supplier, has said that despite rising temperatures and the heavy rain of April and early May, the county-wide hosepipe ban will remain in place in order to conserve resources.
Since 2006 Folkestone and Dover have been officially designated as a “water scarce area”. The water company is asking its customers to save as much water as they can at home and in the garden. Their tips include having shorter showers and using water butts to collect rain water in the garden.
Councillor makes youth unemployment top of the list
May 25th, 2012
The government minister responsible for getting people into work has made youth unemployment in the south east a key priority.
The work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, visited Kent yesterday to witness Kent County Council’s new scheme to get young people into work. Mr Duncan Smith vows that “work will always pay” and giving young people work experience placements is better than giving them benefits. He also claimed that young Britons think being a reality television start is the only career worth having.
Youth unemployment is also one of KCC’s top priorities as Kent has recently recorded the number out-of-work and claiming job seekers allowance is increasing, with numbers higher than the regional average.
