Increase metal thefts on Kent’s railways

Metal theft from railway lines across Kent has increased eight-fold in just three years, it has been revealed.

Network Rail has had to spend £683,000 over the last year fixing tracks and repairing damage caused by metal thieves and this figure was only £82,849 between 2009 and 2010. This comes after MPs raised concerns, saying the problems continue to get worse despite the work of the British Transport Police and Kent Police.

They have been calling the crime utterly selfish, and they say it affects commuters across the whole county with delays and the rising cost of fares.
