Vacancy:  Apprentice Sales Assistant



Academy FM is an educational charity that runs Folkestone's local radio station. It relies on advertising for some of its revenue. The Sales Assistant will support Academy FM’s Manager by undertaking a
variety of sales tasks, office administration, and working with volunteers to manage the radio schedule to
ensure Academy FM fulfils its Ofcom license. The Apprentice will gain a Level 2 or 3 qualification in the
workplace, and be given full training and mentoring by radio station staff and a training provider. Academy
FM is undergoing some staffing changes from the end of July when a new Manager starts, with recruitment
for the Apprentice position being held in October, followed by a start date to be discussed at interview.

Sales ‘lead-finding’ – learning about sales, contacting businesses and informing them about Academy FM
with a view to setting up meetings and making sales.


The Apprentice will learn to do the following:

  • Developing knowledge of what Academy FM can offer businesses, and pass on all information on to

current and potential clients.

  • Learning to contact businesses to sponsor Outside Broadcasts as well as shows and features.

  • Keeping records of sales activity in the C.R.M Database, updating client retention records, sending

contracts and creating invoices

  • Attending sales meetings with Academy FM’s Manager, to learn about the in-person sales process

  • Learning to write social media posts for sponsored content, and managing the Social Media

  • Schedule to ensure that all sponsored content is promoted online

  • Basic website editing to update web adverts

  • Administration tasks including creating contracts, Purchase Orders, sending emails and invites to all

clients, writing up clients points of sales to create radio commercials.

  • Share the organising of sponsored Outside Broadcasts, and assisting (often at weekends)

  • Liaising with the programming team and volunteers to ensure broadcast slots are filled

Required qualification, skills, abilities and experience:

  • Minimum GCSE Grade 4 in English, Maths, and at least two other subjects

  • Good basic communication skills including written and spoken English, able to write emails to

clients and comfortable in speaking with strangers on the phone in a polite manner.

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills. Some experience of common office software.

  • Able to deal with business owners and members of the public, ideally from some experience in a

workplace or volunteering role, and an ability to work in a team as well as under own own initiative

  • An interest in the media, ideally including radio and social media.


The successful candidate must pass a DBS (criminal records) check and undertake Safeguarding training provided free by Folkestone Academy. Two references will be required. One must be a recent employer, teacher, or college lecturer.
